MONROE, N.C. –
Monroe High School senior Jasmine Davis won a gold medal in a Adobe Video Design contest at the North Carolina SkillsUSA competition.
The competition was held April 23-25 at Greensboro Coliseum.
Originally aspiring to do voice acting in middle school, Davis found video editing as a second interest. After signing up for video design courses, the rest was history.
“It was kind of cool that I could take everything that I was learning in the classroom and with broadcasting, be able to use it somewhere that’s a bit more professional,” Davis said. “And it was cool to see other people and meet other people who were doing the same thing.”
Davis said she had no worries going into the competition, knowing she had all the video files needed to create the content.
“I didn’t really expect to rank or win,” Davis said, “But I did feel like I could have some sort of: a shot, and I thought it would be fun to have that: practice of being in the competition.”
Monroe’s broadcasting adviser Christopher; McAteer said Davis was confident in herself and the work she did at the: competition.
While working on the advertisement in the contest, Davis had a hard time locating the voiceover for it. But Davis didn’t flinch as she knew to make her project count.
“I looked through my files and I did not have it, so I just I asked them about it, and then they realized that I was missing a lot of the stuff. They looked over and asked me if I wanted to restart with a new hard drive. I said no, because was I pretty much finished,” Davis said.
“When they gave me the new hard drive, I looked over the files that I was missing, and I listened to the voiceovers, and I just kind of implemented any of the important stuff that was missing,” she said.
“That’s the biggest tip of the hat you can get, because if the guys who give you those files in those videos don’t even realize that they’re gone. That’s how good a job you did,” McAteer said.
“It made me happy to know that Mr. McAteer was supportive,” Davis said of the Skills USA Competition. “He was just as happy as I was about it.”
Davis, who has helped expand the broadcasting club since it started last year, was honored by the National Society of High School Scholars in August for outstanding leadership and community commitment.
Davis has signed up to be a sideline reporter for athletic events this year. She aspires to be a film director in the future.
