Forest Hills CTE Teachers Collaborate

Students are not the only ones encouraged to collaborate in school. Career and Technical Education teachers recently utilized their resources to blend teaching environments.

After working with a local family organization, Forest Hills High School Automotive teacher, Bill Books, became inspired to teach students how to properly install car seats. Consulting with his partner teacher, Rocky Mills, the grease monkey duo invited students of Child D

evelopment teacher, Dawn Jordan, to the campus auto shop generating a turbo-charged pit stop engagement between automotive service students and Jordan’s classes.

Union County Department of Social Services loaned the various car seats. Mills explained, “We demonstrated five different types of car seats including booster, forward and rear facing types. That way, the students understood why you put kids in the back seat.”

In addition, Mills commented that if students pursue work in Public Safety or Emergency Medical Services, they will know how to properly install these devices.

Books and Mills also demonstrated air bag deployment. “I didn’t know they were that powerful!” exclaimed Kenijah Knotts.“It was really good! I got a lot out of it!” said Kayli Simpson and added that she wished she could do more with the automotive class to learn about car safety.

Books and Mills plan to continue this collaboration yearly. The duo has also spoken with Health Science teacher, Pam Lanier, with plans next year to demonstrate the effects of air bag deployment trauma by using her instructional mannequin.
