Welding is a high-tech industry that is used in places all over the world. From ladders to aircraft carriers, from NASCAR to national defense, and from the laboratory to sales and repair, the varied welding industry impacts virtually every industry. Technology is creating more uses for welding in the workplace. For example, new ways are being developed to bond dissimilar materials and non-metallic materials, such as plastics, composites, and new alloys. Also, advances in laser beam and electron beam welding, new fluxes, and other new technologies and techniques all point to an increasing need for highly trained and skilled workers.

    SPCC Articulated Credit

Articulated credit is earned as a result of a student's completion of a CTE course and meeting the the following qualifications:

Additionally, students must enroll in a NC community college within two years of high school graduation and meet the following criteria:

    • Final grade of B or higher in the high school course AND
    • Proof of Learning (POL)
      • CTE post assessment
        • Score of 90 or higher
      • Performance-based Measurement (PBM)
        • Meets course proficiency
      • Industry Credentials
        • Courses that have industry credentials as proof of learning will follow the procedure for Credit for Prior Learning as outlined in NC Community College System Curriculum Procedures Reference Manual (https://www.nccommunitycolleges.edu/sites/default/files/academic-programs/crpm/attachments/section1911feb2022creditforpriorlearning.pdf).

Community college officials must verify eligibility of the courses listed on the submitted high school transcript to receive articulated credit. Students may be asked to submit additional supporting documentation or demonstration to receive credit. Colleges must follow the criteria of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) in awarding credit.

The CareerSafe® online program is the first of its kind. It is an interactive, Y2Y (Youth To Youth) online program that addresses the high priority safety training needs of young workers. With the CareerSafe® philosophy, “StartSafe. StaySafe.”, students will learn about their rights and responsibilities in the workplace and gain valuable knowledge about how they can protect themselves and others. Throughout the program, students explore a wide range of occupational safety and health topics including Introduction to OSHA, common physical and health hazards, hazard identification, and how to protect themselves from hazards, all intended to help them StartSafe. StaySafe.

    AWS SENSE

The AWS SENSE Program is a comprehensive set of minimum Standards and Guidelines for Welding Education programs. Schools can incorporate SENSE into their own curriculum in order to help attain Perkins funding as well as to help insure an education that is consistent with other SENSE schools across the nation. This program is fully supported by the American Welding Society (AWS).

    Credentials Available in Welding Academy:
    Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
    Thermal Cutting Process - Plasma
    Thermal Cutting Process - Oxy-Fuel
Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) Short Circuit
Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) Spray
Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) Gas
