Through partnerships with Atrium Health, South Piedmont Community College, Wingate University and other key community groups, Union County Public Schools is excited to extend the Health Sciences Academy pathways to Monroe High School. The Health Sciences Academy, in partnership with Atrium Health, was initially established at Monroe Middle School in 2017. Extending these pathways to the high school provides a natural transition for students interested in the healthcare industry and continues to offer unique, rigorous and highly engaging learning opportunities.

Pathways and Classes

Clinical

Three clinical pathways are offered at the Health Sciences Academy at Monroe High School. Each pathway will provide the opportunity for students to earn a certificate and enter the workforce upon completion or continue to pursue additional educational achievements.

Health Sciences Academy students will begin with Project Lead the Way courses, including Principles of Biomedical Science and Human Body Systems. Other classes include Career Management, Public Health, Sports Medicine, and Pharmacy Tech. Student interest will guide them to three possible career pathways: Nursing, Emergency Medical Services, or Allied Health. Students will be able to earn credentials to enter the workforce after high school, receive an Associate’s Degree from South Piedmont Community College or pursue a health science degree from Wingate University.

Operations

Three operations pathways are available at the Health Sciences Academy at Monroe High School. Each pathway will provide the opportunity for students to enter the workforce upon completion or continue to pursue additional educational achievements.

Health Sciences Academy students will begin with Project Lead the Way courses, including Principles of Biomedical Science and Human Body Systems. This will provide students with a strong foundation in health sciences. They will then select one of three operations pathways based on their interest: Business in Healthcare, Healthcare Information Technology or Medical Equipment/Biotechnology. Students in the business pathway will take accounting courses along with medical billing and insurance courses.
