The Automotive Service Academy develops automotive knowledge and skills in performing scheduled automotive maintenance, servicing and testing of brakes, electrical systems, drivetrain, engine, HVAC and steering & suspension systems, emphasizing hands-on experience. As part of the NATEF accreditation, topics are aligned to the Maintenance and Light Repair (MLR) and Automobile Service Technician (AST) requirements.

    SPCC Articulated Credit

    Articulated credit is earned as a result of a student's completion of a CTE course and meeting the the following qualifications:

    Additionally, students must enroll in a NC community college within two years of high school graduation and meet the following criteria:

    • Final grade of B or higher in the high school course AND
    • Proof of Learning (POL)
      • CTE post assessment
        • Score of 90 or higher
      • Performance-based Measurement (PBM)
        • Meets course proficiency
      • Industry Credentials
        • Courses that have industry credentials as proof of learning will follow the procedure for Credit for Prior Learning as outlined in NC Community College System Curriculum Procedures Reference Manual (https://www.nccommunitycolleges.edu/sites/default/files/academic-programs/crpm/attachments/section1911feb2022creditforpriorlearning.pdf).

    Community college officials must verify eligibility of the courses listed on the submitted high school transcript to receive articulated credit. Students may be asked to submit additional supporting documentation or demonstration to receive credit. Colleges must follow the criteria of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) in awarding credit.

    S/P2 Automotive includes training programs specifically designed for automotive service students as well as collision repair and refinish students. Make sure your students know about the hazards of the shop environment–before they enter the workplace. S/P2 has student safety awareness covered. S/P2’s award-winning online training gives your students the awareness they need to recognize the hazards around them, as well as providing training on skills that are desirable to employers. S/P2 Automotive includes additional personal and professional development courses to help your students find and retain successful careers in the automotive industry, including building a resume and interview skills.

    The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Entry-Level certification tests are designed to indicate a satisfactory level of practical knowledge-based readiness for the workforce in candidates seeking a career in the automotive service industry. ASE Entry-Level certification tests are available for the Automobile, Collision Repair/Refinish and M/H Truck segments (series). ASE Entry-level certification is the first step in building career credentials as an automotive service professional.

    Certification in Auto Maintenance & Light Repair is slightly different from other ASE certifications. If you pass the G1 exam, and have at least one year of hands-on working experience in auto maintenance and light repair (half may be met by appropriate vocational training), you will be certified in this area.
